An emotionally charged, action-packed, and twisty-turny plot makes Jeff Abbott’s latest Sam Capra novel a must-read for spy fans.

Sam Capra knows what it’s like to lose a loved one. Years ago, his wife turned out to be a traitor. His son, whom he loves dearly, was once kidnapped. But it was the death of his brother, Danny, that has stuck with Sam the longest. In fact, it was the main reason Sam joined the CIA six years ago.

Now, new evidence threatens to shake Sam’s world and, once again, leaves him questioning everything.

Recent intelligence reports suggest that Danny, who was thought to have been brutally murdered by terrorists, may still be alive. But that’s not all. Someone has planned an assassination attempt on the Russian president, and it looks like Danny was hired to carry out the hit.

In a flash, Sam’s life is turned upside down by the realization that his brother might actually be alive, and then again when he’s asked to find and stop him from killing a foreign head of state. Stuffing his personal feelings as far down as possible, Sam heads out to follow orders. No matter what.

No longer working with the CIA, Sam is instead employed by a rogue secret organization. Alongside him is Mila, his partner for the current mission. But after learning that Mila too has some secrets of her own, on top of finding out about his brother’s alleged whereabouts, Sam develops some pretty serious trust issues. The more paranoid he becomes, the more he struggles with what his next step should be, allowing another secret assassin to manipulate things behind the scenes.

In what is without question his most personal mission yet, Sam Capra is on a merry-go-round of emotions in the middle of a secret battlefield where nothing is quite what it seems on the surface.

Overall, this is a strong espionage thriller from Jeff Abbott, who remains one of the genre’s most underrated authors. Once the action heats up, Abbott turns it on full-blast. The final act of this book is very well written and totally engrossing. Readers will be racing to see how this story ends, and will be more than satisfied once they get there.

Sam Capra is a great character, and The First Order is a fun, explosive addition to Jeff Abbott’s series.
