A Book Spy Review: ‘Infamy’ By Robert K. Tanenbaum

robert-tanenbaum-infamyWhen an Army veteran claiming he was the victim of mind-control murders a man in New York, a high-profile, my-clients-never-go-to-prison attorney tells the public it’s his “patriotic duty” to take the case and then argues that his client is battling PTSD from his time serving his country.

For Roger “Butch” Karp, the New York District attorney, this case is a headache for a number of reasons. Not only is a murderer standing trial, but the defense is arguing that he’s just a proud American traumatized from the horrific experiences he suffered in Afghanistan. No matter what, this doesn’t look good for his office, and he knows there will be plenty of backlash from the public one way or the other.

Unfortunately for Butch, he had no idea just how much of a lose-lose situation he’d found himself in.

While investigating the case before it goes to trial, Butch meets with a reporter who believes that the murder victim was one of her sources on a story she wrote about government corruption. This would seem to indicate that the murder is far from just a random act of violence, but rather a contract killing that reaches the highest offices of the United States government.

The closer Butch gets to the truth, which may or may not be that the government ordered the killing of a whistle-blower who had enough information to bring them down, the more trouble he finds himself in. If they were willing to kill once to keep things quiet, then what’s to stop them from doing it again?

And is a case really worth winning if it puts a giant target on your back and the backs of your family members, friends, and loved ones? Those are answers Butch must find within himself, ultimately summoning every ounce of courage to do what he believes is right.

After several twists and turns, and with the help of his wife, Marlene Ciampi, Butch goes head-to-head with the big-shot lawyer, unafraid and undeterred. It’s here that Tanenbaum shines, writing some of the most intense courtroom scenes in recent memory.

Infamy is Robert Tanenbaum at his absolute finest. A strong, blazing-fast plot, mind-bending conspiracy, and a dynamic courtroom showdown make this one of this year’s must-read legal thrillers. Buckle up, because this is one wicked-fast ride!
