Thor first revealed the title of his next thriller, Spymaster, the seventeenth book in his mega-popular Scot Harvath series, last August. Then, earlier this month, he released the stunning cover art and promised more details were coming soon.
Thankfully, his fans didn’t have to wait long for the hard-hitting plot details, because Thor just added them to his official website, then made the announcement himself on Twitter.

It’s only 102 words, but it’s a lot to absorb. . . where do we start!?
Obviously, the threat of “all-out war” is gripping, and something Harvath has dealt with on more than one occasion (Act of War, anyone?) throughout the series. The mentor mentioned above is clearly a nod to Reed Carlton, who Harvath affectionately refers to as the “Old Man.” It was revealed in Thor’s last book, Use of Force, that Carlton was having some issues and that someone Harvath has worked with for many years was going to be accepting a high-level position with the Carlton Group, Scot’s employer.
Not to give away the ending of Use of Force, but the final pages deal with Harvath contemplating a promotion. However, while the word promotion sounds good in theory, it’s not something Scot is particularly excited about.
Any type of promotion would require him taking a larger role in the suit-side of the company. Harvath, though, isn’t cut from that cloth. He’s made for the field and remains one of the most elite, battle-tested Tier One operators in America’s back ops arsenal. When national security is on the line, Harvath is the guy you want leading the charge to keep The United States, and her citizens, safe.
That suit-side of the business is pretty clearly what the above information references, the role Harvath has “spent his career avoiding.” One scenario laid out for Harvath in the last book offered a potential happy medium. He could, in a sense, run operations from the field. . . and it sounds like there’s a better than not chance he’ll be trying to do that — and breaking all the rules along the way — in Spymaster.
