The Real Book Spy’s March 2019 Reading Guide

Get Ready, because some of the genre’s biggest stars are gearing up to release new books this month and, whether you’re looking for spine-tingling suspense of hard-hitting action, there’s a little something for everyone.

As always, we’ve chosen several books to feature—and this month, those books are C.J. Box’s Wolf Pack, Joel C. Rosenberg’s The Persian Gamble, Run Away by Harlan Coben, and The Last Second, the latest novel from Coulter and Ellison.

C.J. Box’s Joe Pickett series, which might just be the best franchise going right now regardless of genre, first kicked off in 2001. Since then, Box has written 19 books following the Pickett family, including Wolf Pack, masterfully developing them along the way. From little girls to young women, readers have watched the Pickett girls—Sheridan, April, and Lucy—grow up over the years, and now Joe and his wife, Marybeth, are close to being empty-nesters. First, though, Joe, America’s favorite game warden, must deal with a drone operator who is using high-tech drones to kill wildlife in Wyoming. That leads to a confrontation with the FBI, who warns Joe to back off or millions of people could die. Teaming up with a female game warden and his longtime friend, outlaw turned up-standing citizen Nate Romanowski, Joe takes on his most dangerous adventure yet—one that’s complete with family drama, major twists, and a murderous team of assassins linked to a powerful drug cartel. Longtime readers of the series will finish this one stunned . . . as not everyone fans have come to love, make it out of Wolf Pack alive.

Harlan Coben has long been one of the premier suspense writers in the game, and he dials things up a notch or two for Run Away, which examines every parent’s worst nightmare as an average, everyday guy tries to figure out where things with his daughter—now a drug addict panhandling for money in Central Park—went wrong. Things spiral out of control from there and, as readers have come to expect from Coben, the story twists and turn its way to a shocking conclusion.

Few writers have been able to predict future events and write them into their thrillers like Joel C. Rosenberg, who once earned himself the nickname of “a modern-day Nostradamus.” It’s almost hard to call Rosenberg’s stuff fiction, as his storylines have a tendency to play out in real life, making his particular brew of thriller closer to “prophetic fiction,” than altogether not real. That said, his latest novel, The Persian Gamble, is a sequel to last year’s the Kremlin Conspiracy and follows former Secret Service agent Marcus Ryker as he races around Russia, trying desperately to stop World War III before it officially begins. Those curious to see a glimpse of where the United States conflict with Russia could one day lead have to check out this book.

There are a whole bunch of great co-authors working together across the thriller genre, but you won’t find a more talented duo that Catherine Coulter and J.T. Ellison, who once again have teamed up for another “Brit in the FBI” book starring Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine. This time around, Drummond and Caine are up against a French version of the SpaceX program, which recently launched a communications satellite into orbit—along with a secret nuclear EMP device that has the power to change the world as we know it. Coulter and Ellison are a thriller writer’s dream team, and The Last Second is some of their best work yet.

Find out more about those titles, and a dozen other books set to come out this month, below!

The Malta Exchange steve berryThe Malta Exchange by Steve Berry

The next in New York Times top 5 bestseller Steve Berry’s Cotton Malone series involves the Knights of Malta, papal conclave, and lost documents that could change history.

A deadly race for the Vatican’s oldest secret fuels New York Times bestseller Steve Berry’s latest international Cotton Malone thriller.

The pope is dead. A conclave to select his replacement is about to begin. Cardinals are beginning to arrive at the Vatican, but one has fled Rome for Malta in search of a document that dates back to the 4th century and Constantine the Great.

Former Justice Department operative, Cotton Malone, is at Lake Como, Italy, on the trail of legendary letters between Winston Churchill and Benito Mussolini that disappeared in 1945 and could re-write history. But someone else seems to be after the same letters and, when Malone obtains then loses them, he’s plunged into a hunt that draws the attention of the legendary Knights of Malta.

The knights have existed for over nine hundred years, the only warrior-monks to survive into modern times. Now they are a global humanitarian organization, but within their ranks lurks trouble ― the Secreti ― an ancient sect intent on affecting the coming papal conclave. With the help of Magellan Billet agent Luke Daniels, Malone races the rogue cardinal, the knights, the Secreti, and the clock to find what has been lost for centuries. The final confrontation culminates behind the walls of the Vatican where the election of the next pope hangs in the balance.

The trauma that drove him away spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington, DC. But as the ascendancy of a chaotic administration lifts him from print fame to television stardom, Marshall discovers that his father is terminally ill, and he must return home to face the unfinished business of his past.

On arrival, he finds Bienville, Mississippi very much changed. His family’s 150-year-old newspaper is failing; and Jet Turner, the love of his youth, has married into the family of Max Matheson, one of a dozen powerful patriarchs who rule the town through the exclusive Bienville Poker Club. To Marshall’s surprise, the Poker Club has taken a town on the brink of extinction and offered it salvation, in the form of a billion-dollar Chinese paper mill. But on the verge of the deal being consummated, two murders rock Bienville to its core, threatening far more than the city’s economic future.

An experienced journalist, Marshall has seen firsthand how the corrosive power of money and politics can sabotage investigations. Joining forces with his former lover—who through her husband has access to the secrets of the Poker Club—Marshall begins digging for the truth behind those murders. But he and Jet soon discover that the soil of Mississippi is a minefield where explosive secrets can destroy far more than injustice. The South is a land where everyone hides truths: of blood and children, of love and shame, of hate and murder—of damnation and redemption. But by the time Marshall grasps the long-buried truth about his own history, he would give almost anything not to have to face it.

The “master of heart-pounding suspense”―New York Times bestseller Phillip Margolin―returns with a new legal thriller starring Robin Lockwood.

A young woman accuses a prominent local college athlete of rape. Convicted with the help of undisputable DNA evidence, the athlete swears his innocence and threatens both his lawyer and his accuser as he’s sent to prison. Not long after, there’s another rape and the DNA test shows that the same person committed both rapes―which is seemingly impossible since the man convicted of the first rape was in prison at the time of the second one. Now, the convicted athlete, joined by a new lawyer, is granted a new trial and bail. Shortly thereafter, his original lawyer disappears and his law partner is murdered.

Robin Lockwood is a young lawyer with a prestigious small law firm and a former MMA fighter who helped pay for Yale Law School with her bouts. She is representing the victim of the first rape for her civil lawsuit against her rapist, who is now convinced the rapist is stalking her and trying to intimidate her. At the same time, another client is up on a murder charge―one that should be dismissed as self-defense―but the D.A. trying the case is determined to bring it to trial.
