On September 3, 2024, Mitch Rapp is back for another hard-hitting adventure in Capture Or Kill, the first series entry from New York Times bestselling author Don Bentley.
Bentley—previously announced as the successor to Kyle Mills, who famously took over Vince Flynn’s #1 New York Times bestselling series a decade ago before contributing nine titles to the franchises, including last year’s Code Red—is the author of multiple books in several series including the Matt Drake novels and the Tom Clancy Jack Ryan Jr. series. Now, he slides into one of the most coveted rolls in all of publishing as the voice behind Rapp, the American assassin, and all eyes are on him as prepares to release his first offering, which will be the twenty-third in the series. However, in a twist, Bentley’s book will not slot into the current timeline of events, meaning it won’t follow Mills’ Code Red and be set in today’s world. Instead, Capture Or Kill will take place between Flynn’s Pursuit Of Honor (2009) and The Last Man (2012), the Minnesota native’s final published work.
While taking readers back in time to 2011 might seem like a head-scratching move to some, there’s a good reason why Bentley is revisiting the past, and it all has to do with a plot revolving around Osama bin Laden, the evil mastermind behind the September 11, 2001 terorist attacks that rocked America. It will actually be the first real-world event that Rapp finds himself involved in since much earlier in the series. After all, those who know Rapp’s history will remember that Mitch joined the CIA and became the counter-terrorism operative we all know and love because his then-fiance, Maureen Elliot, was killed aboard Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie.
“Capture or Kill is my love letter to the world Vince Flynn created,” Don Bentley said in a statement to The Real Book Spy. “I wrote a throwback book to provide fans with the opportunity to journey back in time in order to see characters that have since turned the page. If you’re a longtime Rapp fan like me, I think you’ll find plenty of Easter Eggs that will make you smile. If you’re a newcomer to the Mitch universe, I hope the story makes you want to start Vince’s incredible series from the beginning with American Assassin. Capture or Kill is the book I’m most proud to have written and I hope you have as much fun with it as I did.”
Mitch Rapp faces an Iranian foe bent on destabilizing the Middle East in the newest thriller from Vince Flynn’s #1 New York Times bestselling series, now written by the “worthy successor to Tom Clancy” (Publishers Weekly) Don Bentley.
April 2011: On a remote mountaintop overlooking the remains of the Iranian nuclear weapons program, Azad Ashani witnesses a Quds Force demonstration of a capability meant to upend America’s war in the Middle East. Ashani, director of the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security and Irene Kennedy’s former back channel to the Iranian government, recognizes the demonstration’s true significance, and the nation-ending conflict it will provoke. Alone, Ashani stands no chance of preventing this rush to madness.
But with the help of one man, he just might.
In Washington, DC, CIA director Irene Kennedy briefs the president that the operational window to kill or capture Osama bin Laden at his recently discovered compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan is rapidly closing. But before he’ll authorize a commando raid on Pakistani soil, the president demands irrefutable proof of bin Laden’s presence.
Proof he trusts just one man to provide.
Preventing a looming war in the Middle East while delivering justice for the nearly 3,000 Americans killed on 9/11 would be a big ask for anyone.
Mitch Rapp isn’t just anyone.
