Clive Cussler’s latest Dirk Pitt novel is a smorgasbord of adventures ranging from Iran’s nuclear desires to a rogue attack on American soil.
Back for his twenty-fourth adventure, Dirk Pitt is on board the Macedonia with his crew, including his friend and lieutenant Al Giordino, when they receive a distress call from a Russian freighter whose crew members have all died from mysterious circumstances.
Putting their NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency) mission on hold, the Macedonia heads over to give aid to the ship in need.
After arriving to investigate the death of the crew members, Dirk and Al find one remaining survivor and help lead him to safety. But on the way back to the Macedonia two things happen–they discover enriched uranium on board, and an explosion rocks the Russian boat. The freighter, which was headed for Iran, was soon nestled at the bottom of the ocean.
An additional investigation turns up the workings of a shady deal between Russia and a Dutch businessman named Martin Hendriks. A self-made billionaire thanks in part to the development and manufacturing of cutting-edge drone technology, Hendriks is helping Russia acquire a decades-old nuclear weapon.
Most concerning, at least for Dirk and his crew, is the revelation that an attack on American is being planned.
As the good guys set out to stop the villains’ sinister plot, Cussler dazzles readers with multiple breathtaking boat chases on various bodies of water, along with an epic battle involving the USS Constellation, a Civil War ship that was built in 1853.
Aside from Dirk’s main storyline, additional chapters are dedicated to Dirk Junior and his sister, Summer’s, quest to locate sunken treasure on the Baltic Sea. But while looking for gold, they end up finding way more than they bargained for.
With the main cast back and better than ever, the biggest surprise here is a solid list of new characters who bring a lot to the table–including Hendriks, the mysterious villain who steals all the scenes he’s in.
Likewise, fans will be pleasantly surprised with the James Bond-like action sequences written by Cussler and his son (Dirk Cussler), who have now co-authored seven novels together, none of which are better than Odessa Sea.
With a plot as vast as the oceans Dirk loves to explore, Odessa Sea gives long-time Cussler fans exactly what they’re looking for, and will leave them brimming with anticipation for the next Pitt adventure.
Cussler, one of today’s most notorious, bestselling authors, proves yet again why this is his strongest of several bestselling franchises. After a few average entries into the Dirk Pitt series, Cussler has re-found the magic that made Dirk a household name to begin with, and his latest novel blows the competition out of the water.
Odessa Sea is nonstop fun and a throwback to the adrenaline-pumping, globe-trotting thrillers that Clive Cussler is famous for. A must-read for action adventure fans!
