SUMMER READING LIST: Every New Mystery & Thriller Set to Hit Bookstores

Summer is just starting to heat up, which means many will soon head for sand and water in search of relaxation and much-needed sun. That also means that readers will start looking for their next great beach read, and if you find yourself in that camp, well, we’ve got you covered!

This year, the summer months are especially stacked with must-read, can’t-miss new mysteries and thrillers. Frankly, it’s an embarrassment of riches, but that also means that you’ll have multiple reading options—whether it’s action-packed adventures, cozie mysteries, mind-bending psychological suspense, or even a twisting whodunit—no matter what kind of book you prefer. Below, we’ve listed every book we recommend to keep you company while soaking up some Vitamin D in order of publication.

Ironically, because we whittled the list down to only titles being released between June 1st and the end of August, the first two books contrast pretty well. Eruption, which is already being billed as “the reading event of the decade,” takes readers on a fiery, scorching adventure. Co-written by Michael Crichton (who started the book before he passed away in 2008) and James Patterson (who finished writing the story), this Hawaii-based volcano/natural disaster thriller reads like Mission: Impossible meets 2012. Without question, it’s the first red-hot thriller being released this summer, and yes, it is a perfect beach read. With all that heat, though, you may want to cool down eventually, and book #2 on our list was written by yours truly. Out For Blood, which is set in Montana during one of the worst snow storms on record, follows former Marine Raider Mathew Redd, who must decide how far he’s willing to go to protect his family when old enemies threaten to kill him and everyone he loves. If you’re a fan of Yellowstone, this one’s for you.

From there, expect a diverse mixture of mayhem and mystery, with names like Jack Carr, Lucy Foley, Daniel Silva, Brad Thor, T.J. Newman, Mark Greaney, Janet Evanovich, Karin Slaughter, and so, so many more set to release new books.

Happy Reading!

Eruption by Michael Crichton and James Patterson

Release Date: June 3

Little, Brown and Company

Two of the bestselling storytellers of all time have created an unforgettable thriller. A history-making volcanic eruption is about to destroy the Big Island of Hawaii. But a secret held for decades by the military is more terrifying than the volcano.

Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years ahead of his untimely death. Knowing how special it was, his widow held back his notes and the partial manuscript till she found the right author to complete it.

The author she chose is the world’s most popular storyteller: James Patterson. Eruption brings the pace of Patterson to the concept of Crichton—the most anticipated mega-thriller in years.

Clete by James Lee Burke

Release Date: June 11th

Atlantic Monthly Press

In the latest installment in his famous Detective Dave Robicheaux series, New York Times bestselling author James Lee Burke brings Dave’s partner and friend Clete Purcel to the forefront for the first time as Clete and Dave attempt to stop ruthless smugglers of a dangerous new drug

Clete Purcel – private investigator, ex-member of the New Orleans Police Department, and war veteran with a hard shell and just a few soft spots – is Dave Robicheaux’s longtime friend and partner in detective work. But he has a troubled past. When Clete leaves his car at the local car wash, only to return to find it ransacked by a group of thugs tied to the drug trade from Mexican cartels to Louisiana, it feels personal – his grandniece died of a fentanyl overdose, and his fists curl when he thinks of the dealers who sold it.

Just as Clete starts to trail the culprits, Clara Bow, a woman with a dark past hires Clete as a detective to investigate her scheming, slippery ex-husband, and a string of brutal deaths all link back to a heavily tattooed man who seems to lurk around every corner. Clete is experiencing shockingly lifelike hallucinations and questioning Clara’s ulterior motives when he and Dave start to hear rumors of a dangerous substance with potentially catastrophic effects. The thugs who destroyed his car might have been pawns in a scheme far darker than they could’ve imagined.

Gripping, violent, yet interlaced with Clete’s humor and consistent drive to protect those he loves, Clete brings a fresh perspective to a truly iconic series. James Lee Burke proves yet again that he is the “heavyweight champ” and “great American novelist whose work, taken individually or as a whole, is unsurpassed” (Michael Connelly).

Sugar On The Bones by Joe R. Lansdale

Release Date: July 16th

Mulholland Books

In this holy mess of a case for the “perpetual bad boy” (New York Times) sleuths in the beloved Hap and Leonard series, PI Duo Hap and Leonard investigate the untimely death of a woman whose family stood much to gain from her passing.

Minnie Polson is dead. Burned to a crisp in a fire so big and bad it had to be deliberate. The only thing worse is that Hap and Leonard could have prevented it. Maybe. Minnie had a feeling she was being targeted, shaken down by some shadowy force. However, when she’d solicited Hap & Leonard, all it took was one off color joke to turn her sour and she’d called them off the investigation. Wracked with a guilty conscience, the two PIs—along with Hap’s fleet-footed wife, Brett—tuck in to the case. As they look closer, they dredge up troublesome facts: for one, Minnie’s daughter, Alice, has recently vanished. She’d been hard up after her pet grooming business went under and was in line to collect a whopping insurance sum should anything happen to her mother. The same was due to Minnie’s estranged husband, Al, whose kryptonite (beautiful, money-grubbing women) had left him with only a run-down mobile home. But did Minnie’s foolish, cash-strapped family really have it in them to commit a crime this grisly? Or is there a larger, far more sinister scheme at work?
Irreverent, wise-cracking, and full of atmosphere and bite, Sugar on the Bones is not to be missed.

Fire and Bones by Kathy Reich

Release Date: August 6th

Scribner

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs returns with a twisty, unputdownable thriller featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, who finds herself at the center of a Washington, DC, arson investigation that spawns deepening levels of mystery and, ultimately, violence.

It’s never easy working fire scenes, Tempe thinks. Called to Washington, DC, to analyze the victims of a building set ablaze amid mysterious circumstances, she sees all her misgivings justified. The building site is in Foggy Bottom, a neighborhood with a colorful past and present, and the property’s ownership becomes even more suspicious when Tempe delves into its past.

The pieces start falling into place strangely and quickly, and, sensing a good story, Tempe teams with a new ally, telejournalist Ivy Doyle. Soon the duo learns that back in the thirties and forties the home was the hangout of a group of bootleggers and racketeers known as the Foggy Bottom Gang. Though interesting, this fact seems irrelevant—until the son of a Foggy Bottom gang member is shot dead at his farm in Fairfax County, Virginia. Coincidence? Targeted attacks? So many questions.

As Tempe and Ivy dig deeper, an arrest is finally made. Then another Foggy Bottom Gang-linked property burns to the ground, claiming one more victim. Slowly, Tempe’s instincts begin pointing to the obvious: somehow, her moves since coming to Washington have been anticipated in advance, and every path forward seems to bring with it a lethal threat.
